Seaport of Santo Tomás de Castilla
Santo Tomás de Castilla is a seaport with the code GTSTC, located in Guatemala. It was built in 1970 after the earthquake that destroyed another port – Puerto Barriso. Currently, it is one of the busiest seaports in Middle America. It continues to develop and strives to meet modern demands. The port is located next to a free-trade area. The facility employs close to 2100 people. In 2004, it accepted 1372 ships that transported 4.56 million tons of cargo. Since 2004, the port also has had a passenger terminal that is visited by cruise vessels. It served as a strong impetus for the growth of tourism in Guatemala. Every month, four cruise vessels call into the port, each with around 1500 passengers. From this port, one can also travel by ship to other cities in the country. Certainly, Santo Tomás de Castilla has been a port city since its inception, placing all its chips on the growth of this branch of trade.
