The largest seaport in Bangladesh
The seaport of Bangladesh – Chittagong is located at the mouth of the Karnaphuli River in Patenga, near the city of Chitaggong. It is the largest seaport in Bangladesh. The main cargo at the Chittagong port are containers with manufacture articles (clothes, jute, goods made of jute, goods made of leather, fertilizers, sea fruit, etc.) and raw resources.
It is one of the two main seaports in Bangladesh – most of the goods exported from and imported into the country is handled by this very port. Between 2012-2013, the Chittagong Port handled over 43 million tons of cargo, including 1.4 million TEU of container cargo, constituting around 92% of total maritime trade in Bangladesh. Thus, the port is quite important for the nation’s economy. In order to rise up to the challenges of globalization and of a more liberalized global trade and economy, many ambitious projects were undertaken in order to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of its services. This way, the seaport of Bangladesh can compete with world-class ports. In 2013, the Chittagong Port found itself among the 90 ports with the largest traffic in the world.
